Summary, etc. La conscription est instaurée au Canada. Déjà en fuite avec sa mère après le crime terrible commis par son père, Adrien Aubé devient maintenant déserteur de l'armée. Afin d'éviter l'opprobre à Jeannine, nouvellement établie à Saint-Lazare, il choisit de prendre le bois. Commencent alors de longs mois d'errance pour ce fils de notaire, peu préparé à une vie clandestine.
